Autopsy: Man pulled from Lake Michigan in March drowned

A man who was pulled out of Lake Michigan in the South Shore neighborhood in March drowned, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. 

A dive team, police, and firefighters pulled Dereck Reeves from the water in the 3300 block of East Cheltenham Place at 6 a.m. March 17, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Reeves, 27, of the 2900 block of East 78th Street, was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy at the time was pending, but a spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that Reeves drowned, with hypothermia and exposure to cold water listed as contributing factors.

His manner of death (suicide or accident) remains undetermined, according to the medical examiner’s office.
