Driver cited after fatal Aurora crash

A man was killed and two other people were injured in a crash Friday afternoon in west suburban Aurora.

About 5:50 p.m., 21-year-old Shayan U. Farooqi was driving a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder southbound on Eola Road near Prospect Drive when he apparently lost control and the Pathfinder crossed the median and collided with the driver’s side of a northbound 2009 Honda Fit, according to Aurora city spokesman Dan Ferrelli.

The Honda’s driver, 34-year-old Eddie D. Bermea of the 1500 block of Grand Drive in DeKalb, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ferrelli said. His wife, Joyce T. Bermea, had to be extricated from the car by the Aurora Fire Department and was taken to a hospital, although her condition was not immediately known.

The Nissan ended up on its side after the crash, and Farooqi was able to crawl out of it before he was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Ferrelli.

Farooqi, of the 1700 block of Hackney Drive in Aurora, was cited for improper lane usage, Ferrelli said.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, Ferrelli said. Northbound Eola was closed north of Interstate 88 for about five and a half hours Friday night while police investigated.
