A Florida man and a south suburban man were killed in a crash early Sunday on the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side.

Just before 3 a.m., a black 2017 Chevrolet was stopped on the right shoulder of the southbound express lanes of I-94 at 43rd Street when it was rear-ended by a speeding blue 2016 Jeep, according to Illinois State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 72-year-old Eugene N. Ackerman of Boynton Beach, Florida; and the driver of the Jeep, 27-year-old Michael Schaaf of Tinley Park, were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and no other injuries were reported.

According to police, the driver of the Jeep was driving “extremely reckless” before the crash.

All traffic was diverted to the southbound local lanes for the investigation after the crash.
