A 29-year-old man was shot while driving early Tuesday on the border of the Back of the Yards and West Englewood neighborhoods on the South Side.

The shooting happened about 2:15 a.m. when he was driving in the 1700 block of West Garfield and heard gunfire, police said.

He took himself to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the ankle. His condition stabilized, police said.

A police source said the man has documented gang ties.
