TORONTO — The White Sox placed catcher Kevan Smith on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 24) with sacroiliac joint dysfunction Tuesday and purchased the contract of catcher Hector Sanchez from Class AAA Charlotte.
Sanchez, 26, is hitting .143 with two home runs and three RBI over eight games with Charlotte. He was signed by the Sox as a minor-league free agent on December 22, 2015. In 244 games with San Francisco from 2011-15, he batted .240 with 10 home runs and 87 RBI. He has thrown out 20.0 percent of attempted basestealers in his career. He appeared in four postseason games for Giants 2012 World Series championship team.
Smith was recalled from the Knights Sunday and was scheduled to make his major-league debut last night before being scratched from the starting lineup after he felt something in his back during the team’s pregame stretch.
The White Sox 40-man roster increases to 39.
