Mike Singletary was put on the “Reserve – Did Not Report” list, meaning he is not in camp and does not count against the Bears’ 59-man roster. The other holdouts, Al Harris and Todd Bell, do not count because they don’t have contracts.

The 17 player cuts included no veterans but three who had been cut by the Bears before: center Matt Long, safety Kevin Potter and defensive tackle Eugene Rowell. Eighth-round guard-tackle Steve Buxton was the only draft choice cut.

Punters Mike Viracola and Rick Ward and placekicker Bruce Kallmeyer were cut, leaving only Bob Thomas and Kevin Butler in the placekicking battle.

Also cut were quarterback Ken Cruz, wide receivers Stan Johnson and Kenneth Storey, defensive back John Hill, linebacker Ron Anderson, defensive linemen Curtis Garrett and Bill Heathcock, and running backs Ed Phillips, Rozell Clayton and Tony Lombardi.
