Police have released surveillance photos of four people who beat and robbed a Red Line passenger this month on a train near the South Side Garfield station.

One of the four suspects approached the 21-year-old victim on a train about 3:08 p.m. Dec. 7, while they were traveling between the 47th Street and Garfield stations, Area Central detectives said in a community alert.

The suspect asked the victim for a donation for a basketball team, and the victim handed him five dollars, police said. The suspect wasn’t satisfied with that amount and “became irate,” harassing the man for more money.

When the victim refused, the suspect began to beat him, and the three other suspects joined in, ultimately stealing the man’s cash and his iPod before running away at the 55th Street station, the alert said.

Police have released surveillance photos of the suspects, who are described as four black males between 17 and 20 years old, between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet and between 160 and 175 pounds, police said.
