An Amtrak train struck a vehicle Thursday afternoon in northwest Indiana.

Amtrak train 51 was headed to Chicago from New York City when it struck the vehicle about 3:23 p.m. at a crossing at 77th and Calumet avenues in Dyer, Indiana, according to authorities.

First responders found the vehicle in a ditch on the east side of the tracks upon arrival, Dyer police said. The driver, a 29-year-old Dyer man, was the only person in the vehicle and was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

No passengers or employees were injured and the train was not damaged, Amtrak said.

The train was delayed at the scene for an investigation, Amtrak said.
