A Lake County sheriff’s sergeant graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command last week in north suburban Evanston.

Sergeant David Tomasello completed the 10-week course May 17 at Northwestern’s Center for Public Safety, the Lake County sheriff’s office said. The school provides college level instruction in topics including applied statistics, budgeting, leadership, planning and policy development.

In addition to finishing the program, Sgt. Tomasello and his colleagues raised money as a legacy gift for the family of fallen McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner, the sheriff’s office said. They also collected funds for a scholarship in Keltner’s name to send a command member from an underfunded police department to the school.

“The 10-week course is certainly an academic challenge,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “I know Sergeant Tomasello will put the skills and knowledge he learned to great use in our organization and while serving our community.”
