(DOWNERS GROVE) Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a robber who struck two women with his gun and stole their purses early Monday near a park in west suburban Downers Grove.

The robbery happened about 1:40 a.m. in the parking lot of McCollum Park, near 67th and Main streets, according to a statement from Downers Grove police.

The two women were sitting in their vehicle, when a man entered the rear of the vehicle, displayed a gun and demanded their purses, police said.

He struck both women with the firearm before he ran away, Downers Grove Police Sgt. Harry Andler said. They both suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The women had returned to the park to search for an item they had lost earlier in the day, police said.

The suspect is described as a male, thought to be in his 20s, wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants, police said. He wore a mask that partially covered his face.

Anyone with information on the robbery should call 911.
