Auto parts supplier Tenneco Inc. says it will open a new factory in southern Indiana by early next year.

Lake Forest-based Tenneco announced Wednesday that work is underway preparing an existing building in a Jeffersonville industrial park for the factory. The company says it expects production will start there by January, with workers building catalytic converters and other emission-control products for companies including Ford and General Motors.

The company says it anticipates having about 250 workers by 2017 at the factory in the city just north of Louisville, Kentucky. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. is offering Tenneco about $1.4 million in tax credits and training grants based on its hiring plans.

Tenneco says it now has about 1,200 workers in Indiana at factories in Angola, Elkhart and Ligonier.
