A man shot early Tuesday in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side has died.

Demetrius R. Bottom, 49, was standing outside in the 8000 block of South Maryland about 1 a.m. when someone approached and an altercation ensued, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was shot in the side during the encounter, police said.

Bottom, of the 7900 block of South Maryland, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he died at 4:31 a.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

An autopsy Wednesday found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
