The Cubs are used to producing runs via the long ball, but this is a club capable of scoring runs as potent — and swiftly — as any other major league team.
Just ask the Cardinals.
In Saturday’s NLDS matchup in St. Louis, the Cardinals raced to an early lead thanks to a Matt Carpenter home run in the first inning. Not to be outdone, the Cubs struck back with a little small ball.
After outfielder Austin Jackson stole third, Kyle Hendricks scored him with a well-placed bunt.

On the next at-bat, Addison Russell laid down a bunt that scored Jose Montero, increasing the Cubs’ lead to 2-1. Then Dexter Fowler would continue the scoring ways by beating out an infield single and scoring Hendricks.
At 3-1, you would think Chicago would be satisfied with a nice lead. Apparently, Jorge Soler didn’t think that was enough, so he crushed a pitch for a 2-run home run.

As quickly as the Cards got the lead, the Cubs erased it. If the Cubbies can tie the series, the team would put Jake Arrieta in a position to help put the Cubs in the driver seat of the NLDS.
