A California man was struck and killed after stepping out of his vehicle early Thursday on I-65 in northwest Indiana.

Brandon L. White, 21, was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius north on I-65 in the left lane south of the State Road 14 exit at 3:06 a.m. when the car went off the road to the left and hit the median barrier cables, according to Indiana State Police. The car went back on the road and stopped.

A UPS semi truck was heading north and struck the Prius, which then struck the barrier cables again and ended up back in the road facing southwest, police said. A 2017 Nissan Armanda heading north then struck the Prius.

At some point during the crash, White got out of the Prius and the car was hit by another vehicle, throwing him into the ditch on the east of the road, police said.

He suffered massive blunt force trauma and was dead at the scene, police said. His 16-year-old brother, a passenger in the Prius, was not injured. No other injuries were reported.

All northbound traffic was diverted after the crash, but all lanes have since reopened, police said.
