Man fatally shot in possible Oak Forest robbery

The Oak Forest Police Department and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a fatal shooting.

A man was found shot to death Wednesday in southwest suburban Oak Forest.

Officers responding to reports of a possible robbery about 10:30 p.m. found him with a gunshot wound in the 4700 block of West 167th Street, according to a statement from Oak Forest Police Chief Tim Kristin.

Thomas Smith, 31, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, police and the Cook county medical examiner’s office said. Smith lived in Markham.

An autopsy released Thursday found Smith died of a gunshot wound to his abdomen, the medical examiner’s office said.

The Oak Forest Police Department and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating.
